Intro to the Art - A Pre-Event Clinic
Featuring Stefanie Travers, Marty Gardner & Heather Kornemann
BCBHA Member Price - $250
Non-BCBHA Member Price - $275
Join us for a full day immersed in the traditions and horsemanship, and stockmanship that form the foundation of the Old Californio Bridlehorse.
The Intro to the Art Clinic is designed to prepare riders and horses for the weekend while offering an opportunity to learn directly from three respected horsemen and women who have dedicated years to refining the practical and artistic side of ranch horsemanship.
We are incredibly honored to welcome:
· Stefanie Travers
· Marty Gardner
· Heather Kornemann
All three clinicians bring extensive experience as horsemen, stockmen, competitors, and working cowboys and cowgirls. While each instructor will lead portions of the day focused on their individual strengths and passions, the clinic will be highly collaborative, with all three supporting riders throughout every segment. Find out more about these three on Our Judges Page.
The day will begin with horsemanship foundations led by Stefanie Travers, focusing on balance, feel, communication, and preparing horses mentally and physically for the work ahead. Riders will explore softness, timing, body control, and the subtle communication that forms the basis of effective ranch horsemanship.
From there, Heather Kornemann will guide participants through practical stockmanship and herd work, discussing cattle behavior, herd dynamics, rider positioning, and how a crew works together quietly and efficiently to support cattle movement and sorting.
The afternoon will transition into practical ranch roping applications with Marty Gardner, focusing on proper setup, positioning, supporting the horse through rope work, and maintaining thoughtful stockmanship throughout higher-pressure situations. Marty will share practical insights developed through years of working cattle and applying ranch roping in real-world settings.
Throughout the clinic, riders can expect:
· Practical horsemanship rooted in tradition
· Thoughtful, low-stress stock handling
· Real-world ranch applications
· Supportive instruction for both horse and rider
· Open discussion surrounding gear, progression, and the Bridlehorse tradition
This clinic is intended to create a welcoming and educational environment where participants can deepen their understanding of the horse, the cattle, and the responsibilities of the rider while preserving the traditions that continue to shape ranching culture in British Columbia.
Whether you are new to the Bridlehorse tradition or continuing your progression through the hackamore, two-rein, or bridle, we look forward to sharing this experience with you.
