Judges

BCBHA is excited to introduce the Art of the Bridlehorse - 2026 judges!!!   Judging an event like this takes a special kind of person — someone who not only understands performance from a competitive point of view but also from a working perspective. It is extremely important to BCBHA that our judges have the kind of firsthand experience that allows them to recognize and reward smoothness, teamwork, task completion, and a true reflection of heritage. We expect to see a high degree of horsemanship and stockmanship that honors the horse, the livestock, the history, and each other.

Please welcome our 2026 judges!

Marty Gardner - For over 30 years, Marty Gardner has been a dedicated student of the horse, learning from some of the world’s finest horsemen and horsewomen. His relentless pursuit of horsemanship has given him a deep and diverse understanding of the horse, with special focus on Vaquero and Doma Vaquero Style Horsemanship, Classical Dressage, Cattle Handling and Ranch Roping. A cowboy at heart, Marty spent his early years horseback, making a living cowboying on some of the largest feedlots and community pastures across southern Alberta. It was during this time, he also earned multiple Canadian Ranch Roping Championships and high-point awards. It was in those years that fellow cowboys began turning to Marty for help with their horses. The willingness, partnership, and connection he developed with his mounts stood out, and from that foundation grew his lifelong passion for teaching horsemanship. In 2007, Marty and his partner Yvonne founded Flattop Horsemanship with a simple goal: to help anyone interested in horses build the connection they were seeking. Since then, Marty has worked with hundreds of horses and riders across Western Canada, offering lessons, clinics, and mentorship in a variety of disciplines. Stefanie Travers- www.loadstarhorsemanship.com

Stefanie Travers - Stefanie has been a dedicated and extraordinarily committed advocate of the Californio bridlehorse system for decades. Although she won’t say so herself, she was instrumental in inspiring and educating many of the founding members of the BC Bridlehorse Heritage Association’s current Board of Directors. Stefanie was one of the first educators in BC to dig up these traditional methods, polish them off, and hold them up to the light- sharing her passion for an all but forgotten art and bringing clinicians like Bruce Sandifer north of the border to help preserve the system that she found so fascinating. Although Stefanie is not a fourth-generation rancher and never did more than day work on ranches, she is not a storied old vaquero and while she can throw a decent loop, it’s never been in a branding pen. What she is, however, is a dedicated woman who developed a deep, long-standing curiosity about the old Spanish spade bit and hackamore horses and actively set out to educate herself. Being female and not from a ranching background made this a wee bit more challenging than usual and gave her a humility and understanding of what it can be like for folks from similar backgrounds. When she started, she was a full-time farrier, colt starter, and “problem-horse shenanigan fixer-upper.” She sought out the best horsemen she could find, often traveling great distances to do so. “It was sometimes a tough lesson in self-trust, as I was often disappointed-or worse, aghast-and learned the brutal lesson of becoming very careful about who I gave my horsemanship education trust to. I bring this passion for continued education, and for unashamedly seeking knowledge wherever I can find it.” Recently, this passion for knowledge and an ever-increasing desire to learn has led Stefanie to veer into the world of classical equitation, deepening her comprehension of what healthy biomechanics and strong, correct, and lasting equine development should look like. “When I first began sharing this bridlehorse work, I was told it would never stick. I’m delighted to see that it has- and that it continues to grow strong. I am honored to bring my particular lens to this work, along with my deep and abiding love for it, and to inspire others to remain humble and curious as they pursue finer horsemanship and stockmanship.” In addition to being an incredible horsewoman, Stefanie is also an extraordinarily gifted artist who's ability to capture the power and essence of her equine and bovine subjects is matched by her ability to also transmit their gentleness and wisdom through subtle detail. Heather Kornemann- www.shesavaquero.com

Heather Kornemann - Heather is a founding member of the Californio Bridlehorse Association south of the boarder and has been on the CBA board since 2022. She sat on the judge’s panel for the Early Californio Skills of the Rancho in both 2020 and 2022 and rode as a Pro in 2023 and 2024! In 2024 she was voted to be the Skills of the Ranch’s Top Pro! Heather has been a member of the Early Californios Skills of the Rancho committee since 2020 and was instrumental in designing and organizing the classes for the event so we count ourselves extremely lucky to have her join our panel of Art of the Bridlehorse 2026 judges! A little more about Heather: Heather is a cowboy who wears many hats: California Vaquero bridlehorseman, Certified Balance Through Movement Method Trainer and Clinician, Certified Lazaris Nerve Release Practitioner, Owner/Trainer/Instructor at 9X Livestock and Equine Services, and a full-time cowboy for Five Dot Ranch in Benicia, California. For more than 40 years, Heather’s made her living in the saddle. Her life has always revolved around horses and cattle—from her early years in the rodeo business to training cutting horses and working cattle across the country. Drawing on decades of hands-on experience across many areas of the equine industry, Heather focuses on developing the whole horse—emphasizing balance in body, mind, and spirit. Discovering the Old California Vaquero tradition of developing a bridle horse gave form to everything she had aspired to in horsemanship. In addition to her daily work as a cowboy, Heather is dedicated to sharing her knowledge through clinics focused on developing the Early California–style bridle horse and practicing low-stress cattle handling.
